Seismic Design Fundamentals

Course Description

This course is the product of almost a year of development. With recent large earthquakes in populated areas of Alaska we have received numerous requests for a class that will detail out the code requirements of the building codes to make sure builders inside and outside of city limits are meeting the code requirements and best practices when it comes to earthquake protection of our structures. This class covers International Residential Code requirements for braced wall construction, with special focus on seismic categories D0 – D2. Braced wall line spacing, offsets, corner conditions, horizontal blocking requirements, and hold down methods are also covered. The Wood Frame Construction Manual is also reviewed for homes that can’t meet IRC requirements or where alternatives are needed. Several plan-based exercises are included with the class along with worksheets you can use for your own projects to show compliance.
