Wind Design Fundamentals

Course Description

This class is the partner to our seismic design class and focuses on meeting the prescriptive wind design requirements of the International Residential Code for braced wall construction. Wind design uses many of the same bracing methods as seismic design, but determining bracing requirements is completely different. This class covers topographic wind effect, braced wall line spacing, offsets, corner conditions, horizontal blocking requirements, and hold down methods through the lens of wind design. The Wood Frame Construction Manual is also reviewed for homes that exceed the IRC wind limitations that apply to most of coastal Alaska and hillside areas. Several plan-based exercises are included with the class along with worksheets you can use for your own projects to show compliance.
