Basic Building Science Review

ONLINE Course Description
This course gives students a working knowledge and in depth look into heat loss, laws of thermodynamics, how energy moves. Commonly referred to as the HAM (heat, air, moisture) sandwich of a home, these are the building blocks of building science in buildings. The BTU unit and how it applies in building science theory is addressed and gives students a strong foundation in comparing efficiencies. This class also covers controlling heat loss, air leakage, and causes of air leakage including duct leakage, pressure imbalances caused by mechanical systems. How to correct pressure imbalances both positive and negative without destroying the building as a structure or causing long term problems is also addressed. Combustion appliances, ventilation types and their pros/cons from a building science perspective and finally health and safety issues in relation to combustion appliances, ventilation and carbon monoxide are all covered in this four hour course.
